Pirate Time
I have always been especially fascinated by the universe of skulls, which historically have been linked with wisdom and eternity, but also with victory, progress, death and danger, leading to the adoption of skulls in contemporary culture as symbols of popular expression and aesthetic. That's why, when I came across the cast of a skull in an antique market in New York, I immediately saw its artistic potential. At first, this led me to complete it with impeccable dentures, the work of a goldsmith who works with painstaking detail, down to the finest detail. I then covered it with more than 15,000 watchmaking movements, a deeply passionate and creative process which took over 300 hours. The result was Pirate Time, a unique, avant-garde piece which seeks to break the boundaries of seasonality and temporality.
Pirate
Pirates love transparency, privacy, direct democracy, and, in their own way (why not?), human rights, although from a sui generis point of view. Surprisingly, pirate ships were democratic bodies. Captains were appointed by crews, their decisions could be questioned, and there was relative racial equality, something unknown to society in that day and age. At least four pirate captains were known to be women, a phenomenon quite exceptional in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Time
A skull with countersunk watchmaking movements, two concepts closely related to time which I brought together in this stunning and colourful creative piece that speaks of life and chaos, of movements which are new, old, rusted, automatic, made of string, of chimbing, beautiful, ugly, innovative... In short, precision parts which represent human neurons and evoke the passage of life.
A work that I created from the point of view of freedom and love for what is seen and what is done, created to be in tune and in harmony with our environment. Because, like the pirates of old, only when we are free can we best perceive the inexorable passage of time and the inevitable arrival of death.
